WEO Xian Eye Centre

World Eye Organization Xian Eye Centre (WEOXEC) is the first WEO eye centre in China. It was established by WEO in collaboration with New World Group of Hong Kong and Xian No. 4 Hospital on 8 September 2003. The ophthalmology center in Xian Fourth Hospital is the finest and largest in Western China. It specializes in all areas of eye care including treatment, education, research and prevention. The centre is led by experts and researchers from many universities including the Fourth Military Medical University, Shaanxi Province School of Traditional Chinese Medicines and Xian Jiaotong University.

Since the 1950s, the eye center has been conducting major eye therapies and operations such as corneal transplantation and in the 1970s, development of ocular fundus disorder research. The center has sent outstanding doctors and nurses abroad to learn advanced technology and broaden their horizons. In the 1980s, overseas funds were brought in to provide a better clinical environment.

Significant research programs were conducted over the years. Over the past 20 years, more than 20 ophthalmology projects have been launched and over 300 academic articles have been published. In 2005, WEOXEC launched “Ophthalmology in the West”, a quarterly journal to report results of eye research in China.

Through the leadership of Dr. Xie Xiaoming and the support of many eye experts, WEOXEC is operating smoothly and has built a reputation in Xian for its expertise in quality eye care, education and training. Recently, a new program has been introduced to address the needs of the unemployed, retired or poor local residents. For instance, in October 2005, 100 of them were selected and provided with free cataract treatments.
